Welcome to the course!

Metaphor is a powerful therapeutic tool and wonderful natural resource that enables people to conceptualize their lived experiences in new and helpful ways. When we think of an experience or relationship as something else, like a boat ride, a roller coaster, a growing plant, or a windy day, we have a fresh perspective to understand significant parts of our lives. We use these metaphors to help us understand the world and ourselves differently, and by drawing out the important details of those metaphors, people often find helpful tools, new strategies to try, and peace in understanding! We are always creating the world around us and making meaning of our experiences, thoughts, and feelings, and metaphors expand our universe and language to describe these experiences.

In this course, participants will hear from two counselors who use metaphor in their personal lives and in their clinical work. They hope to offer you ideas for bringing the wonderful world of metaphor into your therapeutic conversations, and help you detect useful and potent metaphors in your client's language already. By the end of the course participants will:

1.) Define metaphor and develop their own definition of metaphor

2.) Learn how to deepen metaphors and draw parallels to lived experience

3.) Take away practical interventions to use metaphor in clinical work
