Course Description

Narrative Therapy is a developing therapeutic approach that began to really take shape in the early 1990s, but has continued to grow in recent years. It is an approach where therapists and clients work together to remember, edit, and give meaning to the stories that shape the clients’ identities, and allows them to take control as the authors of their larger stories. What makes Narrative Therapy unique is the therapist’s assumption that “the person is not the problem; the problem is the problem.” Through various techniques the presenters explore in this two-hour course, you will learn how to assist your clients in externalizing the problem outside of themselves so that the problem becomes less powerful. This allows the client to reclaim their identity outside of the problem-created identity.

In this course, listeners will:
1) begin to understand the history of Narrative Therapy
2) explore theories at the core of the approach
3) learn about the various techniques that make Narrative Therapy unique

Listeners will also hear practical suggestions for beginning to incorporate Narrative Therapy techniques into their clinical work.
