Course Description


Mental health and educational professionals who work with children with Attention-deficit disorder and/or Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and/or have training in Play Therapy can significantly benefit from this course. The presenters will give an overview of ADD/ADHD and various theoretical approaches to Play Therapy for use with this population. The view of ADD/ADHD as a separate culture will be highlighted, and participants will learn effective strategies for engaging client caregivers.

Course Objectives:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of ADD/ADHD and the use of Play Therapy with this population, 

2. Understand the various emotional and behavioral components of ADD/ADHD and how they impact the child, and 

3. Employ Play Therapy skills for counseling children with ADD/ADHD.

About the instructors

Ashley Lawton

Ashley Lawton, MS LMHC NCC RPT CCPT-S is the Assistant Director at Integrative Counseling Services. She is also an adjunct professor at SUNY Oswego. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and her Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling at the State University of New York at Oswego. She is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) through the state of New York. Ashley is credentialed as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). She is also credentialed in Play Therapy as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) through the Association for Play Therapy (APT) and as a Child-Centered Play Therapist Supervisor (CCPT-S) through the National Institute of Relationship Enhancement (NIRE). Ashley has presented on various Play Therapy topics, often relating to grief and loss. She is a member of Friends of Oswego County Hospice’s Bereavement Committee. At Integrative Counseling Services Ashley provides counseling to adolescents and young adults, as well as Play Therapy to children. Her duties as Assistant Director include overseeing staff, supervising the coordination of intakes, supervision of graduate interns, handling day to day operations, and managing crisis situations as they arise.

Penny Lupo

I am a Licensed mental health counselor and Certified Child Centered Play Therapist working at Integrative Counseling Services PLLC, a private practice in New York.  I have been working as a counselor for 8 years with children, teens and adults.  My special interests in my counseling work are trauma, ADHD, adoption, infertility, attachment and parent support.  I like to include mindfulness-based practices with clients, caretakers and counselors that I supervise.My work prior to counseling was in Early Childhood Education where I was a Certified Teacher in New York State.  I have worked in many capacities in the early education field including a Universal Pre-K teacher, a Curriculum Coordinator and a Director in a childcare center.  I currently teach Child Gym at a local community college in Auburn and maintain contact with the early education community from that role.  I have also taught Kid Power Yoga to children in a Montessori program and served on the NYS Association for the Education of Young Children Board as the treasurer for several years.
